Serving YOU in Serving Others
CISM interventions are designed to foster a culture of wellness and interpersonal support in returning first responders to duty in the aftermath of critical incident, to normalize their responses to trauma and tragedy, to mitigate the impact of these events, and to assist first responders in all things transformative on their pathway to recovery and resilience.
The SWOCISM Team Mission
The Southwest Ohio Critical Incident Stress Management Team was developed to provide debriefing following critical incidents for any Public Safety Service Worker and/or Critical Care Provider requesting assistance. The focus of this service is to minimize the harmful effects of job stress, particularly in crisis, or emergency situations. As such, the highest priority is to provide services to mitigate the harmful effects of job stress utilizing educational services i.e.; on scene support, defusings, debriefings, and individual needs.
The Team will also maintain confidentiality, and respect the feelings of all individuals involved. It is not the function of the Team to replace ongoing professional counseling, but to provide education and immediate crisis intervention. Through the CISM Team educational process, the Team provides an important tool to alleviate stress-related symptoms.

The Process
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) uses a step-by-step strategy to help first responders and others who have been involved in critical incidents that leave them or their team emotionally and/or physically affected by an incident or even due to an accumulation of multiple incidents that have gone unresolved.
This process enables peers to help peers understand and overcome problems by putting the puzzle pieces together after an incident.
There are three possible scenarios for when CISM might be used:
Defusing — this is a process to be used for a critical incident to assist a group immediately, usually, at the scene or within a few hours of an incident.
Debriefing — usually occurs 3–5 days after an incident to assist a group.
One-On-One — this is done either in place of the above two choices or in addition to, after a Defusing or Debriefing has taken place.
This purpose of any of the three processes above is meant to allow individuals or groups to get back to what they do best in being a productive member of their team and to also maintain a healthy lifestyle.
